Day 07b Gedan Songzhangling Monastery

Gedan Songzhanglin Monastery is 5km north of Zongdian. It is founded in the 17th century by the fifth Dalai Lama and situated on a hill amongst residential houses.
It was designed as a smaller version of the Potala and is sometimes known as the "Little Potala". It currently has more than 700 monks and is the largest Tibetan monastery in Yunnan

The main temple is situated at the top of a long flights of stone steps and is a typical Tibetan four storey block-house structure with a gold-plated roof. The roof provides fine views of the surrounding countryside
