Day 03 Tiger Leaping Gorge

The Tiger Leaping Gorge (HutiaoXia) is located 100km north of Lijiang at the Jinsha Jiang (The name of the Yangtze river in Yunnan). It gets its name from a legend that a tiger found the gorge so narrow that it leapt across in one go. The legendary site has a huge boulder, i.e. the Tiger Leaping Rock, and a life-size statue of the tiger on one bank. The gorge is wedged between the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba Mountain and the gorge is around 4,000m deep.

Indeed, as the gorge is so narrow, the Jinsha Jiang is very ferorcious here (see the video).

Most tourist come to the upper gorge to see the Tiger Leaping Rock. Vehicles will bring you a car park directly above the rock and you walk down the stairs (of course need to climb up later) to see the rock. The gorge is also a popular area for hikers.
