Day 07a Potatso National Park

Potatso National Park, established in Jun 2007, is China's first national park. The 2,000 square-km park two crystal-clear lakes that are popular with tourist, the Shudu Lake and Bita Lake. About 69 km of paved roads connects the two lakes and boardwalks stretch 10 km along the mirror-like lakes to protect the grasslands. The two lakes are at around 3,500m above sea-level and the highest point of the road is at about 4,000m

Environmental friendly buses ferry vistors around the park and no outside vehicles are allowed. From the visitor center at the park entrance, the first bus stop is the west side of the Shudu Lake. One can drop off here and walk along the southern side of the lake to the next bus stop, at the eastern end of the Lake. The bus then goes to a viewpoint at the top of a pasture where herders bring their yak here to graze in summer. The next stop is the eastern end of Bita Lake, where one can walk along to the northern side of the lake, or take a boat ride across the lake, to the next bus stop where buses goes back to the visitor center.

The park and the lakes are scenic though not spectacular. Perhaps the gloomy weather did have some impact. A good place to relax but will not think of visiting again.
